British Ploughing Championships come to Somerset

Clydesdale Bank has announced that its agricultural business is to sponsor the dinner at the 61st British National Ploughing Championships to be held at Bishop’s Lydeard near Taunton, on Saturday and Sunday, 8th & 9th October 2011.

Graham Poulton, Clydesdale Bank’s Agribusiness partner with special responsibility for Somerset said: “I have many clients and friends within the Somerset agricultural community so I am delighted that this fantastic event is coming to the county and that Clydesdale Bank has been able to support it.

“The Bank has very strong links with the regional farming community and in recent years has supported a wide variety of projects and capital investments.

“We understand that participants in the competition will include past and present British, European and World ploughing champions trying to take the British National titles and win the opportunity of representing their country in the 2012 World Ploughing Contest.

“This is a very big event indeed, and over 16,000 people are expected to attend during the two days of competition. “

The National Young Farmers Area Champions will compete on the first day and ploughmen in the conventional and reversible classes will parade to their plots, with the qualifying ploughmen going through to the finals on the second day. Their prize will be the honour of representing their country in ploughing's international 'Grand Prix' World Ploughing Championships to be held in Croatia in 2012.

Classes for vintage tractor ploughing will be held on the second day, with area champions in hydraulic, trailing and classic ploughing competing for the British National Vintage Champion and a place to represent England in the 2012 European Vintage Ploughing Championships.

Graham Poulton will be accompanied by Exeter based Treasury Partner, Helen Jenkin and Head of Clydesdale Bank’s Agribusiness Jamie O'Mahoney.
