Andrew B Young, a farming firm operated by the Young Family in Girvan, has secured a seven-figure funding package from Clydesdale Bank. The deal will support their investment in renewables, including the purchase of an anaerobic digester.
The late John Young purchased the farm in 1968 when the farming policy was based on finishing cattle, combinable crops and early Ayrshire potatoes.
Building for the anaerobic digester began in February 2016, supported by funding from Clydesdale Bank. The first engine was running by August 2016 and the second commissioned in September. The anaerobic digester was built to run alongside all other farming enterprises and has had a very positive effect on the farming business.
The digester is bringing both operational and financial benefits with the product created from crops processed by the digester having a greater nutritional value than originally expected. The result is that the farm has been able to save considerable costs on fertiliser.
Partner in the farming business, James Young, said: “Throughout our time with Clydesdale Bank, they have been extremely supportive and open to new ventures. Whenever an opportunity has arisen, they have been very helpful. Our relationship manager has worked closely with us, shown interest and has been very forward thinking.”
Andrew Denniss, Agri manager, Clydesdale Bank said: “James has shown great vision and determination to continue building this fantastic business and we were delighted to play a part in helping them achieve their growth ambitions. Agriculture is and always has been a key element of the business we do and we’re focused on working with the sector for many years to come.”
