Cruise Loch Ness Ltd have received a six-figure development overdraft to support funding of a new six-figure catamaran passenger ferry. Once the boat is completed, the development overdraft will be converted to an amortising loan.
The specially-designed catamaran has a large deck with windows for an improved view. The upper deck will be open at the sides, but covered, making it practical for the unpredictable Scottish weather. It will carry 220 passengers, almost doubling the capacity of Cruise Loch Ness’ current largest vehicle.
The catamaran will be powered by a pair of Volvo D9 MH main engines – capable of speeds over 20 knots while still being fuel-efficient.
Loch Ness continues to be one of Scotland's top tourist attractions and the launch of the new vessel will be high profile for the business and the local industry. It was commissioned following a dramatic rise in demand – with the company recording a 20% increase in numbers during 2015. Nessie fans from all over the world will soon be able to board the new vessel and get out on the Loch for an unparalleled view – and hopefully a glimpse of the legend.
Ronald's father Norman launched the business in 1968 with Ronald becoming a partner in 1990. Since then Cruise Loch Ness has gone from strength to strength, and even achieved a 5-star award from the Scottish Tourist Board in September 2015. The boats are also used regularly for television and film crews, notably appearing in the ITV Drama 'The Loch.
Managing director Ronald Mackenzie said: “We’ve been experiencing year on year improved consumer trends, and 2015 was phenomenal for us.
“The idea of the catamaran has been floating about for a couple of years, but the time just feels right to take a leap. We felt if we didn’t do it now, we might have to turn away business in the future, and we certainly don’t want to do that.
“It’s a very exciting for all of the Cruise Loch Ness team. We have a great relationship with the Clydesdale Bank and could not have done it without that support.”
